Have you ever wondered how it’s possible that we have two eyes, yet see only one image? This is due to a system that connects our eyes and brain that allows us to see one clear image. For this to happen, a number of things have to go right. Especially when our eyes move, it’s a pretty complex system that is at play. With the digital revolution, we are seeing more issues and complaints of eye strain, eye fatigue, headaches and neck strain. It is believed that this can stem largely in part from a misalignment of our eyes, especially while doing near tasks such as computer work, reading, or even viewing our phones!
It is a lot more work on our visual system to keep an image clear and single when it is nearer to us (i.e. our computer or phone!). Because of this, the majority of the population’s eyes want to naturally align behind where they need to be. However, if this occurred, we would see double.. YIKES! Our brain is so good at not allowing this to happen, that it sends compensatory signals to bring the desired near target in to focus. By doing this constantly, it can cause overstimulation of our trigeminal nerve, leading to eye fatigue, eye strain, headaches AND even neck aches!
Check out this video for a visual of this process.
