Dry Eye is a condition that affects around 48% of American adults... that’s almost 1 out of every 2 adults!! There are several treatment options for dry eye, and some may work better for you than others. One option that we are going to discuss is the insertion of punctal plugs. Our puncta are a little opening on both our upper and lower lid near our nasal side. These openings are responsible for draining our tears that should cover the surface of our eyes constantly. By blocking these drainage ducts, we can increase the time that our own tears stay on our eyes, and increase the moisture content in our tear film!
It is a very simple procedure that can be done in office. It usually takes about 5 minutes. At Eye Care Center, we usually insert them in just the lower lid to begin, and then will evaluate the need for plugs in the upper lid. There is no pain during the insertion, and once the plugs are in, there is no feeling of them.
